iFarmer digital
Bangladesh
iFarmer platform improves Bangladeshi farmers access to capital, advisory services, and markets, amid a booming middle class. From the app or website, farm investors sponsor a head of livestock, or crop, selecting their farm of choice with a fixed rate of return to be paid to them at the end of the stipulated farm cycle (4-12 months) along with the initial capital. The website provides farm updates for investors. Investors are individuals - many are in Dhaka, some are outside of Bangladesh. Most smallholder farmers prefer to share profits instead of pay interest, but larger operations prefer interest. Input retail agents facilitate farmers' participation, and and show them agronomic learning modules on the app. Farmers can also call in iFarmer to ask agronomic questions. iFarmer takes the role of an aggregator for sales, facilitating or directly transacting with large food retailers, to ensure good prices. Currently, value chains include a selection of plant crops and livestock; plan to expand to fish and poultry. iFarmer is also developing a lending tool for financial institutions to be integrated.
