Mobile Market Information Service (MMIS)
Papua New Guinea
The Mobile Market Information Service (MMIS) project was initiated by the Fresh Produce Development Agency (FPDA) to provide up-to-date market information of fresh produce to smallholder farmers and other players in the value chain. Smallholder farmers have the opportunity to get up-to-date market information on their produce through their mobile phones. This service provides information on prices, supplies and quality of various fruits and vegetables available at any given time at selected urban markets around the country. To access market information, users are required to send a short message service (SMS) using a specified call code to Digicel, the service provider, with an appropriate product code. After sending the SMS, users will receive a return message containing the desired information at any urban market instantly.
