Village Resource Centres Initiative
India
The Village Resource Centre is a programme launched by ISRO and the Department of Space in 2014 (initially 456 Village Resource Centres). The main idea behind developing VRCs is to disseminate the service portfolio emanating from space systems and information technology tools directly to rural communities. Implemented in association with NGOs, trusts, universities, and government agencies these VRCs are envisaged as the primary delivery system in the countryside for various services like tele- healthcare, tele – education, local weather, advisories on agriculture, fisheries, etc. Village Resource Centres have provided various space technology enabled services such as tele-healthcare, tele-education, natural resources information etc.. The major benefits of the VRC programme include advisories related to agriculture like crop pest and diseases, fertilizer/pesticides, organic farming, crop insurance etc.; live stock/poultry, career guidance to rural students, skill development and vocational training etc., to the rural population.
